About Us

Betsy and I are 75 years young.  Married  54 years. We are passionate about smoking meat. Not  very good at it, depending on who you ask. The judges don't think so, some time. LOL We smoke meat for friends and family. We do some low profile "backyard" competitions with limited success. The competition results are obviously subject to the palate of the judges. I was feeling down about placing 8th in ribs and 15th in pulled pork, out of 22 competitors. I was going to take all the meat that was left to an event at church the next day. A fellow competitor told me "It doesn't matter where you place today, you will be #1 in their hearts tomorrow". Puts it all in perspective. We do it because we love to do it. Our pay is the smile on someone's face when they say "that's good stuff right there". God put us here to serve others and to spread the Gospel. We strive to do that.

This was a very rewarding and also difficult competition. The Storms came around 12:30 but only lasted about an hour and a half. Rain, hail, lightening and high wind. With the help of our church, we pushed through and was Blessed with 2nd in Chicken and 5th in Pulled Pork and 8th in sauce.

Each competition that we do, we feel it could very well be our last. They get harder as we get older but really enjoy them. We don't have any other worldly interests that we enjoy as much as smoking meat and competing. We are really not very good, just Blessed by God. I want to thank Jeff and Denise Fuller for being with us for this competition. They booked a room for two nights in Chipley, FL and got up at 4:15am on Saturday morning and was there all day long helping in any way possible. Betsy and I are very grateful for the Love and support they gave. Thank you Kirk and Shirley Thompson and family for visiting with us. The weather was perfect. There were nine teams. At least one semi-pro competition team and one or two BBQ restaurant owners and then there were back yard wanna bees like us. We payed close attention to detail this time. 2nd in Butts, 2nd in Ribs and 3rd in Chicken. 2nd Runner up overall. Thank you Lord.

The Lord Blessed Us with 2nd in Sauce and 1st Runner Up for Grand Champion!

HS 2021 was a very rewarding but very difficult Competition for us especially at 71 years old. We set up everything on Wednesday because they were predicting rain and storms for Friday evening and Saturday. They did not miss it by much. Betsy and I with Jeff and Denise Fuller arrived at about 5:30 on Saturday morning to finish setting up. Getting the chicken, ribs and butts ready to smoke. The rains came shortly thereafter. We were ready though. It rained hard, we cooked harder. Our biggest Blessing kept coming as friends and our church family started arriving, even in the rain. Thank y'all so much. It was not a great day from a cooking standpoint. My "Smoke" electronic thermometer went out so I couldn't monitor the temp on the butts. That coupled with the rain was a big distraction and I let the ribs and butts overcook. Could not cut them up properly. Too done! Falling apart. Oh, the taste was there and that is all you need at home or a cookout but not enough for competition.

                    BBQ in the Pines 2019

Hosted by Washington County Chamber of Commerce, Chipley FL

Betsy and I happened upon this event when a Friend of ours, Kirk Thompson with The Thompson Family Gospel Group "Liked" a post by WCCOC. Through some texting with Sarah at WCCOC we entered the event. It was their inaugural event. The event was at Hard Labor Creek Plantation, owned and operated by Mr. Ted Everett. This was over three hours from us which presented a challenge within itself. Mr. Everett was very accommodating, did a great job getting everything organized. This plantation is perfect for a BBQ Cookoff and the country music with local vendors selling their baked goods and specialty hand made treasures. We cooked three meats, Ribs, Chickens and Boston Butts. Got started about 5:30am, the weather was perfect, in the upper 60's and only climbed to the mid 80's by afternoon. There were true "backyard" teams, restaurant owners and BBQ Catering teams represented. This was by far the friendliest and most fun cook teams we have ever competed with. We finished "Third" in Ribs, Butts and Chicken. God Truly Blessed us on this day. Thank you Jeff and Denise Fuller for all your Love and support to be able to do this cookoff.

Holy Smoke 2018 with Oakland Baptist

This is a Christian competition that is hosted by Macedonia Baptist church in Preston, Ga. We are raising money for the Baptist and Methodist Children's Homes. The first year we competed for New Providence Church and since then for Oakland Baptist. The first year we took first in chicken and 3rd in pulled pork. We have always been blessed to finish in the top three in at least one of the four categories. This event is only open to Churches. Betsy and I have been competing since 2014. It is always a great time in the Lord. This year we were so Blessed to win "Grand Champion". We were first in Chicken and first in pulled pork, 4th in sauce and 6th in ribs. This was the toughest one yet as it rained off and on all day. They have a cake competition/auction but it does not count toward the "Grand Chamption" award. The cake auction is something to behold. They have it just prior to handing out the trophies. This year the 1st place cake brought $1150.00 and the second place cake $1000.00. It is a very spirited and exciting auction always bearing in mind that it is for the kids. Betsy's cake did not get top three but it is #1 in my book. It was a hummingbird cake and I think the best she has ever cooked. We were going to make this our last year to compete because of our age and the difficulty in competing however we have decided to come back at least one more year. We have a renewed excitement. LOL. We get to keep the "Big Pig" Trophy for a year. We will add a name tag to it for Oakland Baptist 2018 to go along with the other nine names of previous years. We are so thankful for our dear friends Margie and Earl Turner and Diane and Donny Watson that toughed out the rain to support and help us help the kids.
